USW GuidanceĀ

University Guidance on Using AI

The University guidelines state that ‘students must be the authors of their own work. Content produced with generative AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, without an approved method of declaration and/or prior academic approval, does not represent the student’s own original work so could be considered a form of academic misconduct.

You must confirm with your tutor before using Artificial intelligence (AI) in your assignments. Some module assessments do not permit the use of AI tools, while others may allow AI with some limitations. It is your responsibility to check your assignment brief and ensure that the use of AI tools is permitted within an assignment.

For full details on the University's guidelines on unacceptable practices see the USW AI policy document.

Note: Guidance on the use of AI is continually changing to reflect developments in the field - please check this page regularly for updates.

Generative AI Text based

If the AI’s end product (for example use of ChatGPT in conversation) is only available to you, cite this as a personal communication and include a description of the AI generated material in your in-text citation. Consult your tutor in case they require you to provide a copy of the AI work as an appendix to your work.

Citation Order:

  1. AI tool name
  2. Year of communication (in round brackets)
  3. Medium of communication [AI]
  4. Receiver of communication (response to your name)
