APA referencing

This guide introduces the APA referencing style and includes examples of citations. Mae'r canllaw hon hefyd ar gael yn Gymreag.

Notes on how to reference journal articles

  • Online articles which are the same as the printed version are referenced as a printed article. 

  • Always include the DOI of a journal article if one is available. 

  • If each issue of a journal begins on page 1 then give the issue number immediately after the volume number. For example 10(1), 59-67. 

  • Where there are more than three authors, name the first author and then use et al. in the text of your document.  

  • For articles with more than 20 authors, list the first 19 author’s names in full in your reference list then insert an ellipsis … (but no ampersand) and then add the final author’s name.

How to reference a journal article

 

Reference order

  1. Author(s) surname/family name,
  2. Initials.
  3. Year of publication (in round brackets).
  4. Title of journal article (not in italics).
  5. Title of journal (in italics),
  6. Volume or part number
  7. Issue number if each issue of the journal begins on page 1 (in round brackets), 
  8. Inclusive page numbers (just write the page range without p. or pp.). 
  9. DOI if available https://doi.org/

In-text example

There were “consistent and generally strong victim prototype effects in the male-typed occupations…the effects are weak or close to zero for the female occupations”. (Carlsson & Sinclair, 2018, p.290). 
OR 
According to Carlsson and Sinclair (2018, p.290) there were “consistent and generally strong………”

How to reference newspapers and news websites

Reference order

  1. Author(s) surname/family name,
  2. Initials.
  3. Date (Year, Month Day in round brackets).
  4. Title of article (initial words/nouns capitalised).
  5. Newspaper title (In italics, important words capitalised).
  6. Column or section heading if from a printed newspaper. 
  7. p. or pp. if from a print newspaper or Retrieved Month Day, Year, from URL https:// if from an online newspaper 

In-text example

Violence in the home and refusal to go to school are identified as significant side effects of gaming disorder (Bowden-Jones, 2023). 
OR 
Bowden-Jones identifies violence in the home and refusal to go to school as significant side-effects of gaming disorder (2023).

  2. Date (Year, Month Day in round brackets). 
  3. Title of news article (in italics). 
  4. Name of News website (If author is the News website, you do not need to include it here). 
  5. Retrieved Month Day, Year, from URL https:// 

In-text example

One of the reasons that Hollywood actors are striking is ... (McCallum, 2023). 
OR 
McCallum reports that one of the reasons that Hollywood actors are striking is ... (2023).
