Introduction & access

EndNote online is a free web-based service and is recommended for undergraduate (UG) and taught postgraduate (PGT) students.  EndNote online is a more limited reference management tool than EndNote desktop software and is only available online. EndNote online users can create a library with up to 50,000 references and up to 2GB of attachments with 21 reference styles available.

Access

To sign up for a free account, you need to register for an account at EndNote.

  • Click the Register button and complete the information required on the Register to continue with EndNote page.
  • You can use your University email address but if you use a personal email you can continue using it when you graduate or if you contunue studying elsewhere.
  • Create a password that is different from your University password
  • Complete the registration process
  • Open the relevant email account , University or personal and activate the link in the email sent from EndNote

You can then sign-in to EndNote and start adding your references.

Collecting references

There are three main ways to add references to your EndNote online library:

  1. Exporting directly from a database - this is the straightforward way of adding references and most databases will allow you to upload references, directly in an EndNote format. Remember to login to EndNote online first.
  2. Exporting / downloading - If a database does not provide a direct EndNote export option, it is usually possible to save the reference in a suitable format that can be imported into EndNote. Use a 'RIS' export option which can be saved and uploaded into EndNote online.
  3. Creating a new reference - within the 'Collect' option on EndNote online is the option to create a 'New Reference' manually, from 50+ formats, from book to webpage.

There is also the option to find references via an 'Online Search' function within the 'Collect' option of EndNote online. This is very limited and is not recommended.

Organising the references

The 'My References' area contains the following:

  • All My References - contains everything you have added to EndNote.
  • My Groups - is where all the groups you have created are located. Groups can be named to match an assignment or module name.
  • Unfiled - contains references that have not been filed in a group.

In the 'Organize' area you can:

  • Manage My Groups - this is where you can rename a group, delete a group or manage the sharing of a group.
  • Find Duplicates - this function allows you to discover duplicate items that may be introduced to your library as you gather your references.

Creating a reference list

EndNote online bibliographic styles support:

  • APA 6th - APA is the referencing style required for Psychology students. The USW guide is based on APA (7th edition).
  • Cite Them Right-Harvard - Harvard is the main recommended referencing style at USW.
  • MRHA (Author-Date) - MHRA is the referencing style required for History students. The USW guide is based on the MHRA Style Guide: A Handbook for Authors and Editors, 2013.
  • Numerical Methods - Numeric is the referencing style required for Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Science and Forensic Science students.
  • OSCOLA_4th_edn - OSCOLA is the referencing style required for Law students.  The USW guide is based on OSCOLA (4th edition).

These styles may or may not conform exactly to the USW guides for your referencing style, so please check and edit the reference when needed to comply.
